Place of birth:
Whittier, California

Family information:
Married to Brenda; father of Jocelyn, Charisse, and Paul.

How did you come to NHC?
In 1993, at the age of 29, Brenda, Jocey, and I came alongside a group of families from my childhood church in Whittier (First Family Church) to be the pastor of a brand new work in Brea.  We’re all 18 years older, a bit wiser—lived long enough to see God do great things, expecting His best in the days ahead.

What is your role at NHC?
My role as pastor has changed as the congregation has changed.  I used to work alone, taking myself out to lunch on Secretary’s Day.  Now, I am part of a team, focusing on vision, preaching, leadership, and community outreach.  I spend time with as many people as I can, trying to walk alongside them in their journey in Christ.

What is the best part about your role?
I love having breakfast or lunch with another man, hearing his story, sharing some of mine.  I love weddings and baby dedications, for they are great celebrations.  I love it when somebody shares the good, the bad, and, even, the ugly about their life with me.  I love watching somebody experience the freedom found in Jesus.  I love funerals of people who die in righteousness.

Who is your favorite character in the biblical story? Why? How do you identify with him/her?
I like Thomas, always have. Unlike John, he needed extra help, for his faith needed some proof.  He asked and Jesus answered.  In kindness, Jesus gave him proof.  I often feel the same way, naturally skeptical.  I battle with uncertainty and Jesus is so kind to me, so many times, so many ways.  He has offered me his “nail-scarred hands” many times over the years.

Who are your favorite sports teams?
Lakers, Angels, 49ers, Trojans, and whatever team the kid from church is on!

Who is your favorite musical artist or group?
Darrell Evans, Chris Tomlin, Hillsong, and the North Hills Church Band. I like all musical genres; always interested in something unique.

What were you like in junior high?  Why?
I was very mature for 12.  I was good with chicks.  I was handsome, groovy, and self-controlled.  I was a model citizen, never in trouble at school.  Well....then I would wake up and go to school and act oppositely.  However, although my actions were messy, my heart was good.

If you could only have one book to read (other than the Bible), what would it be?  Why?
My Utmost for His Highest, by Oswald Chambers.  Every time I read it, I see something new.  Plus, I have to read it three times to understand it once.

If you could choose your last meal on earth, what would it be?  Why?
Steak, twice-baked potato, broccoli with butter, and hot bread.  When the plate is clean, I’d put away a tall glass of milk.

What makes you laugh?
Quirky humor, physical slapstick, and stuff our family experiences together—the kind of stuff that is hard to explain to the rest of the outside world.

What makes you cry?
Stories of grace; stories telling about God coming to the rescue; stories about humble people doing unknown things that change the lives of others; stories about my kids, reminding me how quickly time flies.
