Place of birth:
Chico, California
Family information:
Married to my lovely bride, Lauren Altermatt since August of 2003. Together, we have two beautiful children: Melea, age 9 and Addison, age 7.
How did you come to NHC?
My wife Lauren was one of the first youth in the youth ministry in North Hill’s earliest stage. North Hills Church is where she met Jesus. Pastor Doug Green married us both in 2003, and provided council throughout my ministry career. Both Doug Green and Drew Smithson have been very instrumental in our lives throughout the last decade. When we were approached to consider coming to North Hills Church as the Youth Pastors in 2013, we felt like the timing was of God. It is an honor to work alongside of such great men of God. We now feel we are at home. We love this community and are excited for the journey ahead!
What is your role at NHC?
Student Ministries Pastor
Preaching and Teaching / Oversight for Senior High, Junior High, Youth Staff, Interns and Volunteers / Leadership development / Oversee Youth Missions trips, Youth Conventions, Outreaches, other various Activities, and Camps
Creative Team
I also have the privilege of serving on the Creative Team. This team was established to assist the Senior Pastor in the creative development for our services throughout the year.
What is the best part about your role?
I LOVE hanging out with teenagers and cheering them on. It is exciting to watch them excel in their world of sports, music, and drama…whatever their interests lie in. I also LOVE sitting across the table from another sipping a cup of good coffee and sharing life together.
I have a strong vision for the community and am highly interested in the future success of young people. I am passionate about seeing students’ lives transformed for the sake of Christ. My desire is to connect students in relationship to one another and to Christ, releasing them into their full potential of what God has called them to.
Who is your favorite character in the biblical story? Why? How do you identify with him/her?
I have always been drawn to David, a man after God’s own heart. Good looked at his inner qualities, not his outward appearance. David was ordinary, often overlooked, and overcame limitations placed on him by many. David didn’t let the fears of man stop him from pursuing his God and the calling that was upon him. David achieved greatness. He saw both victory and defeat. He made mistakes and he repented. He was a great example of God taking an ordinary man to do extraordinary things.
Who are your favorite sports teams?
San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Lakers, USC Trojans and the teams our kids from church are on!
Who is your favorite musical artist or group?
U2, Cold Play, Keane, Snow Patrol, One Republic, U2, Jack Johnson, Jesus Culture, Hillsong United. I’m a fan of music!
What were you like in Junior High?
Long and dangly, curious and a risk-taker. I broke things regularly. I was ACKWARD in Junior High.
If you could choose your last meal on earth, what would it be? Why?
I’m a sucker for a good steak, loaded bake potato, and a buttered down piece of corn (Can we say Texas Roadhouse). It would all start with a good chips and queso for an appetizer, followed by a salad with all the fixings, MINUS TOMATOS, and washed down with a blackberry iced tea from CHILIS.
What makes you laugh?
People in awkward situations. I often find myself laughing at inappropriate times. I love a dry sense of humor and situations that turn into inside jokes.
What makes you cry?
Stories filled with people overcoming impossible odds and miraculous, life changing encounters with Christ. I am a softy. I cry easy, and will often find myself turning my head to wipe down a few tears even in a good movie!
